Feather Fest National Wildlife Refuge Destination
A trip to Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is a highlight of the Birds of a Feather Fest, and will introduce festival participants to its large and diverse bird life. The refuges boasts more than 330 species and is a major destination for birders throughout the world. Hundreds of thousands of migratory birds use the refuge either as a rest stop or spend the winter season.
More than 200 bird species have been seen at another festival field trip location: Lake Woodruff NWR. Its impoundments provide resting and feeding areas for thousands of waterfowl, wading birds and shorebirds, including yellowlegs, Limpkin, Fulvous Whistling-Duck, Short-billed Dowitcher, American Bittern and many songbirds.
The Feather Fest includes a bird walk to North Peninsula State Park to observe the Brown Pelican, Northern Gannet, terns, gulls numerous shorebirds, songbirds, waterbirds, wading birds and woodpeckers as well as the endangered Florida Scrub-Jay.
With more than 125 miles of hiking, biking and walking trails, miles of coastline, varied habitats and more than 200 identified bird species, Flagler County is a birder’s paradise.
