Blain has been leading photography adventures on every continent for over 30 years, including Hansen’s quest for Mt. Everest. For more than 20 years, he has been guiding photographers in the Asia-Pacific region and Japan with his wife and logistics leader, Manami.
Beginning with Polar Bears in the Canadian Arctic, and adventuring in the Rocky Mountains of North America, he has assisted National Geographic Society. His clients include Oxford University Press, Penguin House, Longmen, Helly Hansen, Mountain Hardware, Sierra Design, Troy Lee, PhaseOne, Jim Zuckerman, Sigma Industries, Native American Jewelry II, RECCS and many others.
He doesn’t just put you in front of a prized subject, he helps his clients capture perfect shots.
For example, Japan’s Snow Monkeys are a glamour species for most visiting photographers. Blain knows dozens of individual monkeys by name, rank in each of the 3 troops and how mating relationships evolve over time.
For example, after a new male had taken over alpha status in the troop that visits a famous hot springs, Blain alerted his clients to closely watch the new leader’s behavior.
During that photography workshop, the male attempted to mate with a reluctant female, and was firmly rebuffed. “It was his expression in that second that we captured,” Blain said. “He had this look. . . It’s what I prefer. I want something that’s unique and real.”
Blain takes the same experienced approach to everything from Red-crowned Cranes and other cherished crane species as well as Stellar’s Sea Eagles, Oriental Storks and the endangered Crested Ibis.
You will join him first as a client, and later as a friend and fellow photographer.
